Coolidge Field One on a muggy spring morning was the setting. The Padres were set to host the Astros in interleague play. Two evenly matched teams looking to bounce back from one run loses in their previous outings.

To kick things off the Padres sent veteran James Flanagan to the mound and he was dealing early. James struck out three of the first five batters he faced, but not before the Astros got on the board. A double by Colin Desruisseaux helped score Cam Randazza from second to take an early 1-0 lead. Colin would take the mound for Astros and despite recording two K’s of his own, the Padres managed to tie the game. Singles by Connor Bouffard, Louis Rossetti and a double by Jack Costa helped even things up early. End of 1: Padres 1 …Astros 1

The second inning was all about the pitchers. Despite some patient at bats by both squads, each pitcher registered three more K’s.  End of two: Padres 1 …Astros 1

To the third we go and here come the Astros. Ryan Lee lead things off with a single, followed by another double for Colin and just like that the Astros were able to string together three runs behind some disciplined at bats. It looked like the Astros were poised for more until young Dennis Moody took the ball for Coach Rossetti and shut down the Astros hitters. Solid pitching and some nice defensive plays in the field kept the Padres off the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. End of three: Astros 4 …Padres 1

Much like the second, the fourth inning was once again about the pitchers. In his first full inning of work Dennis was able to strikeout three, while Colin answered with three of his own. End of four: Astros 4 …Padres 1

The fifth and final inning saw Dennis return to mound and quickly retire the side. With his pitch count limit closing in, Colin would hand the ball over to closer Tim Donohoe who would end the game with a strikeout. End of game: Astros 4 …Padres 1

What a fun and exciting game that saw plays being made in the field, great pitching, and terrific at bats. Best of luck to both teams for the remainder of the season.
