They are also the connection between port cities and the planet. Historically, their accessibility was a metaphor for the evolution of the port-city relationship. They changed from being accessible in the past, to gradually become off limits. Fortunately, there is a tendency to give back this access and reopen the piers for the people, inaugurating a new kind of port-city relationship. . But how permeable are these relationships today? What flows are shaping these interactions? How are port cities presenting local answers to global trends? What bridges? And how are ports reopening their piers?

Ever wondered how routing algorithms can help us understand and improve accessibility by taking into account hills and gradients? Assessing accessibility means accounting for the different ways we experience our entire urban landscape including walking routes which veer up or down hills.Watch Gala's talk which explores routing algorithms, 20-minute neighbourhoods and hills from #TICTeC2024https://buff.ly/3WUEDUD #WomenInTech #WomenInInnovation #Accessibility #UrbanPlanning #Planning

The title might appear very dry ("Land use and transport planning: DfT Science Advisory Council paper") but there are lots of insights in the piece, many of which we have been discussing recently with our transport planning colleagues. This para in particular was a hot topic in a recent meeting ".... consequence is that most major housing developments require substantial road building and/or junction capacity increases to meet the anticipated increases in car trips and so be approved. These investments are generally hugely expensive (tens to hundreds of millions of pounds). If some fraction of that investment were directed towards high-quality active travel, public transport networks and local community facilities then levels of car use could be substantially reduced and the net community benefits could be much greater."https://lnkd.in/eMzgbrxV

Great piece by the editors at Scientific American today! "Vehicle crashes are among the leading causes of death in the U.S. But it doesnβt have to be this way. We can design or redesign streets to make people drive more slowly or to discourage driving altogether. We can invest in better public transit, including subways and buses with dependable, on-time service. And we can change zoning laws to allow denser housing and mixed-use developments, so people can live closer to where they work, attend school or socialize." Article: https://lnkd.in/gdMwp6jJ
