Panthers vs. Oilers final score, results: McDavid breaks Gretzky record as Edmonton stays alive in Stanley Cup final | Sporting News (2024)

The Oilers aren't done skating.

Down 3-0 in the series, Edmonton rallied for an 8-1 blowout win in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against Florida.

The eight goals match a franchise record for goals in a single Stanley Cup Final game, as the Oilers posted an 8-3 win in the clinching game of the 1985 championship series. The NHL record is nine goals in a single Stanley Cup Final game, accomplished three times, including last year by the Golden Knights.

The Panthers exited the first period already trailing 3-1. It was the Oilers' first multi-goal lead of the series, and they only expanded on it as the night continued.

Connor McDavid netted his first goal of the series to start the second period, then recorded assists on three consecutive goals. He broke Wayne Gretzky's record for most assists in a single postseason (31) with his fourth point of the night. McDavid sits at 32 assists through 22 games.

Dylan Holloway also had a great night for the Oilers, finishing with two goals and one assist. Fifteen of the 18 Edmonton skaters tallied a point in the game.

Stuart Skinner was the best version of himself, saving 32 of the 33 shots he faced. Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, meanwhile, allowed five goals on 16 shots before the Panthers pulled him in the second period.

The Oilers avoid a sweep and now will fly 2,500 miles to Florida for Game 5. The Panthers can close this out on their home ice on Tuesday, June 18.

Just one team has overcome a 3-0 deficit in the Stanley Cup Final — the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs. Edmonton needs three more wins to match the feat.
