How accurate is storm radar? ›

Weather surveillance radars such as the WSR-88D can detect most precipitation within approximately 80 nautical miles (nm) of the radar, and intense rain or snow within approximately 140 nm. However, light rain, light snow, or drizzle from shallow cloud weather systems are not necessarily detected.

Velocity data is derived from the phase, or doppler shift of the returned energy. The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds.

For example, a Doppler radar transmits a signal that gets reflected off raindrops within a storm. The reflected radar signal is measured by the radar's receiver with a change in frequency. That frequency shift is directly related to the motion of the raindrops.

Typically, radar data is output from the sensor in a frame. Much like a single frame from a video, a radar data frame is a group of data which is captured in a short period of time, and aggregated together to create a snapshot representing a single moment in time.

A seven-day forecast can accurately predict the weather about 80 percent of the time and a five-day forecast can accurately predict the weather approximately 90 percent of the time. However, a 10-day—or longer—forecast is only right about half the time.

When navigating using VOR's, they used the 1-In-60 rule (i.e. if an aircraft is 60nm from a VOR and 1° off-track, the aircraft is 1nm off-track). But there is a more generic form of the rule that is useful for radar. Just take the radar range and add two zeros to find out what one degree equals.

On a weather radar map, a tornado is usually indicated by a smaller area of red surrounded by a larger area of green. However, modern radar systems can also indicate debris balls, a sign of a tornado on the ground.

Red shows winds blowing away from the radar, and green shows winds blowing toward it. Stronger winds usually equate to brighter colors on the radar imagery. You can spot rotation and a possible tornado in a thunderstorm by looking for strong winds blowing in different directions right next to each other.

What will Doppler radar not detect? ›

It's widely known that RADAR systems are not able to detect stationary objects, only moving ones.

The wavelength of the microwaves is smaller, so they can be transmitted as a beam signal in the desired directions. And also, microwaves do not change their path when it collides with any object. The microwaves may reflect from the object but it cannot change their path. Hence, it is used in radar.
